It’s fall and students are back in school and hard at work to deliver three outstanding shows this year.
Off Book Productions opens its 15th season with the Laura Gunderson drama, Silent Sky. The true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, the play explores a woman’s place in society during a time of immense scientific discoveries, when women’s ideas were dismissed until men claimed credit for them. Silent Sky, much like the movie Hidden Figures, re-centers women who made critical, groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of space. Off Book Productions will present Silent Sky on Friday, November 1 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 3 at 3 p.m. Please note there is no Saturday performance due to the homecoming dance.
Next up, after a year hiatus, is the return of the annual musical. This February, the CHS Theatre Department will present the smash hit musical… oh, wait… I can’t announce it yet as the contract is being reviewed by the District as this article is going to press. But I can tell you that “The Name of the Game” will be to take you to the Greek Isles and may involve a “Dancing Queen,” so please “Take a Chance on Me” as it will not cost you a lot of “Money, Money, Money.” The show goes up February 21 – 23 and February 28 – 29 and March 1. Showtime is 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays. Call the department at the number listed below for the official title.
In the spring, Off Book Productions will close out the season with their production of the play A Feminine Ending by Sarah Treem. The show is a gentle, bittersweet comedy about a girl who knows what she wants, but not quite how to get it. Her parents are getting divorced, her fiancé is almost famous, her first love reappears, and there’s a lot of noise in her head, but none of it is music…until the end. The show runs April 17 – 19 with shows on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
Tickets for all shows are $10 and are available beginning an hour before curtain. For further information call the department at 321-939-6600 ext. 50608
